Combating Asset Theft with Real-Time Tracking and Risk Management

One of the critical issues SA Taxi faced was asset theft in a specific location, which posed a significant threat to their operations. To combat this, we collaborated with SA Taxi to build on their existing asset tracking system by implementing a more robust solution. Leveraging Google Compute Engine and Google Pub/Sub, we developed a real-time tracking system that utilized Google Cloud Dataflow to handle the streaming data pipeline. Vehicle history was stored in a Postgres instance on Cloud SQL, while Apache Airflow, running on a Kubernetes cluster, managed the data flow, with BigQuery serving as the primary data storage solution.

This enhanced system analyzed historical route data to identify low- and high-risk vehicles, allowing SA Taxi to monitor suspicious asset movements in real time. By generating immediate alerts for high-risk activities, the system enabled SA Taxi to intercept potential thefts and enhance their overall asset security. The implementation of this solution resulted in a significant reduction in theft incidents and improved risk management capabilities, safeguarding their valuable assets and ensuring continued operational efficiency.

Improving Fleet Management with Real-Time Data and Analytics

In addition to asset security, SA Taxi faced challenges in accessing real-time data from their vehicle tracking devices, which hindered their ability to monitor driver adherence and respond to infractions promptly. To address this, we partnered with SA Taxi to replace their batch processing system with a real-time stream processing solution. Using Google Cloud Dataflow and Google Pub/Sub, we ensured that data from vehicle tracking devices was fed directly into a BigQuery data warehouse, allowing for instantaneous analysis.

To complement this data infrastructure, we developed a user-friendly dashboard using Apache Solr and Vue.js, providing SA Taxi’s analysts with real-time search, filter, and analytical capabilities. This system enabled SA Taxi to monitor and manage their fleet in real time, significantly improving operational performance. By identifying issues such as fraud, theft, and driver compliance in real time, SA Taxi was able to take immediate action, enhancing both vehicle and passenger safety.
